StartUp – Thursday, July 21, Romans 7:21-25

Listen Later

Hi, Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Thursday, July 21, My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. Today we finally get to finish Romans 7.
Romans 7:21–25 (HCSB)
21 So I discover this principle: When I want to do what is good, evil is with me. 22 For in my inner self I joyfully agree with God’s law. 23 But I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this dying body? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh, to the law of sin.
What is the principle that Paul has discovered?  It’s that he can’t do the good that he wants to do.  He knows God’s law, he loves God’s law, but he can’t obey God’s law.  Why is this happening, what is the whole point of Romans 7?  It’s to say that he can’t beat sin on his own, if the fight were up to him, he would be doomed.  But the fight against sin is one that has been taken on by Jesus Christ.
How does that look in the Christian’s life, that Jesus is the one fighting against our sin?  First, it acknowledges that the victory is already won.  Jesus has died and defeated sin and death.  That victory is for all of us.  Second, it says that this victory is being carried out by God’s power in our lives.  This means that winning the fight against sin is God’s concern and his grace and plan for our lives.  Our job is to be faithful to God, to lean on him for his strength that helps us to obey and act in love.
What about when we sin?  I offer you God’s peace.  He is faithful to forgive, all that you need to do is confess your sin, and you are made right with God. Yes, sin is fighting against you, but no, it won’t win.  The victory is final and secure in Jesus for all who are his beloved.
Challenge
My challenge for you this week is to actively take note of sin’s deception in your life.  Try to figure out how it has been lying to you.  Some red flags will be places where you are becoming isolated in relationships, and were wrong desires and hopes are taking root in your heart.  I challenge you to actually write these things down, making a list of sin’s plan to destroy you.  My goal here is that you will be wise to sin’s strategies and that this information will help to not be deceived and therefore to not be harmed.
