StartUp – Thursday July 7, Romans 6:12-14

Listen Later

Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Thursday July 7, My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. Did you think that becoming a Christian would automatically make you stop sinning?  I wish it were that easy, but because its not, here is some good teaching from the Bible.
Romans 6:12-14 (HCSB)
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. 13 And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. 14 For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.
If not sinning was automatic, Paul wouldn’t have to teach us about it.  The truth is that sin still has some level of temptation against us, we don’t automatically stop sinning when we become a Christian.  But we do know that Jesus has already paid the price for our sins, and that God calls us Right and Good, and that his Grace will always be a part of our lives. So relax, you are not going to fall out of grace with God.
Here in Romans 6, Paul has switched gears from saying that we are saved by faith alone to now building on that teaching.  Yes we are saved by God, and its all because of Jesus and not at all because of anything that we did.  But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have to obey God, and follow his teachings.  The next gear that Paul is teaching is saying that we can live lives of increasing holiness.
Sometimes we think that being a Christian only concerns things that happen in the spiritual realm, but being a Christian actually affects every part of who we are, and that includes the way that we use our body.  For example, the words that you speak can be used as a weapon for good or for evil.  The actions that you take can also be used both ways.
As Children of God, we don’t have to do good to be saved, but the good that we do is still of immense benefit to us.  You can think about every action that you take as being used as tools for your righteousness.  You do things with your body for good, and find out that God is doing a work in your heart as well.
Challenge
The Challenge this week is to do something kind for one of your neighbours in Jesus name.

I want to invite everyone to our Stampede Breakfast on July 17.  I am telling you about it early, in case you want to volunteer.  It runs from 9 to 11 on that Sunday and I would love to see a whole bunch of youth volunteering before, during and after the breakfast.
