Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Thursday June 9. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. Have you ever been guilty of saying one thing, and then doing another? That is what Paul accuses the Jews of in…
Romans 2:17–24 (HCSB)
17 Now if you call yourself a Jew, and rest in the law, boast in God, 18 know His will, and approve the things that are superior, being instructed from the law, 19 and if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light to those in darkness, 20 an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of the immature, having the full expression of knowledge and truth in the law— 21 you then, who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach, “You must not steal”—do you steal? 22 You who say, “You must not commit adultery”—do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob their temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 For, as it is written: The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.
What Paul is saying to the Jews can also be applied to those of us who are Christians. Paul lists off many legitimate advantages that Jews had over others, and then he points out that they aren’t even taken advantage of their advantages. They are teaching good things about God, but they are not living out those truths. What is the result? You talk about what a Godly life should be, but never get to experience it for yourself. Its like describing your favourite desert, but never getting to taste it.
This can happen to us as Christians as well. We read the Bible and say, “That’s amazing. There are so many cool things here.” But then do we live out those lessons. A disciple of Jesus is someone who learns from Jesus AND applies what he says. We want to be legitimate disciples, people who learn and live the truth.
If you don’t live out what the Bible teaches, it can be depressing. You get to read Jesus words as he says that those who are in him can have freedom and an overflowing abundant life. But when you don’t live out his truths you find yourself in chains to sin and you don’t know the joy, peace and rest that Jesus promises.
We have so many advantages as Christians. Now, we need to learn and live what Jesus said, so that we can experience those advantages. We don’t want to just describe God’s goodness, we want to taste and see that He is good.
Maybe our biggest advantage as Christians is that we are given God’s Holy Spirit to live inside of us. He can help, correct, lead, comfort and teach us, giving us the power we need to live out the truths that Jesus has taught us.
Your Challenge for this week is to encourage someone with a written note. The words that you write will last, and can be used to help that person now and in the future.
