StartUp – Tuesday July 12, Romans 6:20-23

Listen Later

Hi, Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Tuesday, July 12, My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. Today we are taking a look at cause and effect.
Romans 6:20-23 (HCSB)
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from allegiance to righteousness. 21 So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now, since you have been liberated from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification —and the end is eternal life! 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Most of us understand the basic concept of cause and effect.  When you flick the switch the lights come on, cause and effect.  When Paul says that there is fruit that leads to righteousness, he is talking about cause and effect.  When he is talking about the wages of sin being death, he is still talking about cause and effect.
The cause of both physical and spiritual death is sin.  The cause of both physical and spiritual life is obedience to God in Christ Jesus.  I say in Christ Jesus, because if you attempt to be obedient to God without Jesus help, you will find it impossible.  Our obedience is in Jesus for two reasons.  The first reason is that God counts his obedience as our obedience.  The second reason is that it is a gift of God for all of Jesus followers that he gives us the freedom to obey him.
In this passage, Paul wants for you to see the difference in the cause and effect of both sin and righteousness.  Sin leads to death.  But righteousness in Jesus leads to life.
But how do we find that righteousness in Jesus?  We do it by faith.  In our hearts, we believe that Jesus is truly God and has died for our sins and was raised from the dead.  With our mouths, we tell whoever will listen what we believe in our hearts.
