Good Day Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Tuesday May 3, 2016. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Today’s scripture is Matthew 3:13–17 (HCSB)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?” 15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him to be baptized. 16 After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him. 17 And there came a voice from heaven: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!
This week’s scriptures all focus on the theme of Baptism. Yesterday we looked at how John was baptizing people so that they could be forgiven of their sins. In today’s passage, we see Jesus being baptized. We know that it was the right thing for him to do, because when Jesus comes out of the water a voice from heaven says, “This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him.” This is interesting because we know that Jesus never sinned, so why is he getting baptized?
One reason why Jesus was baptized was to fulfill the law. Jesus lived the life that we all should have lived, he did everything right, and in getting baptized he models to all of us that we too, need to be baptized.
In his baptism, Jesus is also identifying himself with humanity. He shows us that he knows what it is like to be human. He knows what its like to submit himself to authority, to follow the rules, to learn and to grow. But even more amazing than jesus identifying with humanity, is Jesus offer to humanity to identify with God. If we are going to be followers of Jesus, that means wearing his identity over our own, we want to be come less so that he can become more.
Baptism is a very public way to identify yourself as being with Jesus. You tell the world that your life is no longer about you, now you are living for jesus, and for his glory.
This week’s challenge is a big one, and so its going to be the same each day. If you haven’t been baptized yet, I challenge you to be baptized. It is something that Jesus asks all of his followers to do, and it will put you on record as being identified with Jesus Christ. Our church is holding a Baptism service on June 5, its a great time to obey Jesus in being baptized.
