Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Wednesday June 22. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. Today’s scripture passage is about a really important promise.
Romans 4:9–12 (HCSB)
9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness. 10 In what way then was it credited—while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also. 12 And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.
You might wondering, why is Abraham so important and how come the theme of circumcision comes up over and over again.
Those are good questions, and its really valuable to note that God credited Abraham with righteousness before Abraham was circumcised. You wan’t to be in the line of Abraham because Abraham is the one that God gave a huge amazing promise to, and the promise extends to all of Abrahams descendants.
In Genesis 12, God made the promise. In Genesis 17 God asks Abraham and all his decedents to be circumcised as a sign of righteousness, and what Paul wants you to note is that its just a sign. Being right with God doesn’t happen because you do enough good deeds or present yourself in a certain way. Being right with God comes because God has made you right, and this can only happen through Jesus Christ.
And so God’s promise is for all who are made right by God, Here it is, all the people of the earth will be blessed by Gods people. God’s blessing will flow to us and through us, so that the earth will know God’s goodness.
