Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Wednesday June 8. My name is Caleb and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Our passage today provides a clear answer to anyone who wants to have an excuse for not following God’s law.
Romans 2:12–16 (HCSB)
12 All those who sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all those who sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For the hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be declared righteous. 14 So, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, instinctively do what the law demands, they are a law to themselves even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts. Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts will either accuse or excuse them 16 on the day when God judges what people have kept secret, according to my gospel through Christ Jesus.
Imagine if a group of people discovered a new land and set up camp right away. They would be without any laws, because it was brand new land without any government. But there would still be right and wrong, good and bad. If one of them stole the others thing, then there would still be finger pointing and accusation. The fact that this sense of right and wrong can exist outside of any laws points to a law that is above all countries laws. It is the law of God, it is His truth, and it operates in our minds and conscience even when we can’t see it written out. This is why the Gentiles are without excuse in their disobedience, its because their own conscience condemns them, even without the Bible.
The Jews on the other hand are without excuse because they had God’s law read to them every Sabbath in Synagogue since they were babies. They knew it inside and out, but according to Romans, they were hearers of the law and not doers of it. Both groups, those with the law, and those without the law, are without excuse for breaking God’s law.
You are in one of those two groups, you have no valid excuse for sinning, otherwise known as breaking God’s law. You are bound to perish with the law, or without the law. Your only hope is Jesus Christ, who fulfilled God’s law entirely. If you put your life in Jesus Christ, then his right living becomes your right living, and your are given eternal life instead of destruction. May you know God’s saving power in your life.
Here is your Challenge for the week. I know that this is the last week of classes for many of you, and maybe the last time that you will see some of your friends for the summer or longer. I challenge you to write a kind and encouraging note to someone this week who you might not see again for a while.
