March is regarded as Human Rights Month mainly due to the Sharpeville massacre on the 21st of March 1960 where people’s rights were violated by the then apartheid regime. So today we kick off the month by looking at the state of human rights in our country. How much do we have to celebrate seeing the inequality in our country and poverty around us? Corruption in government dominates the news agenda while racism and gender based violence refuse to go away? How should we describe our current state of human rights?
