State to Change Migration Rules as Asylum-Seeker Housing Costs Soar - 25/11/2025

Listen Later

The Government will tighten migration rules this week as the cost of housing asylum seekers continues to soar.

Two memo papers will go to Cabinet on Wednesday bringing greater clarity to rules around reunification of families.

One will look at the Department of Justice policy dealing with non-European Economic Area (EEA) family reunification for people who have arrived in the State through various legal pathways, a policy that was last amended in 2016

The policy document will set out the conditions for a sponsor to apply for a family member to be reunited with them in Ireland.

It is understood a key provision will be an expression of ability to financially provide for a family member.

John Lannon, CEO of Doras, joined us on The Agenda this morning to talk to us some more about this.
