What is the real goal of parenting?
Is it to protect your child from every mistake, solve every problem, and always be there when something goes wrong?
Or is it to gradually raise a human being who knows how to think, decide, recover, take responsibility, and eventually run their own life?
In this episode of the Status I AM Podcast, Jeff Scott explores what it means to raise a personally sovereign child.
But the conversation starts with the parent.
Are you a helicopter parent? A fixer? A protector? A best-friend parent? Hands-off? And when your child struggles, whose discomfort are you actually trying to remove, theirs or yours?
We look at how children develop independence through responsibility, consequences, sports, household skills, decision-making, failure, and the gradual transfer of ownership from parent to child.
We also explore:
• Why capability matters more than simply comparing grades
• How to recognize strengths your child already possesses
• The difference between personal sovereignty and rebellion
• Why fixing every problem can steal evidence of competence from your child
• How sports teach decision-making under pressure
• Why competence creates real confidence
• How parents can unintentionally make a child's performance part of their own identity
• Parenting across two households after divorce
• How responsibility should increase as capability develops
• Why small mistakes at 12 can prevent much larger mistakes at 28
• The gradual transfer from “I do it for you” to “you can do this without me”
The goal isn't to raise a child who will always need you.
The goal is to help them become capable enough to carry their own identity, think independently, make decisions, accept consequences, correct themselves, and eventually govern their own life.
ABOUT STATUS I AM
Status I AM explores identity, individualism, introspection, individuation, and personal sovereignty.
The goal isn't to give you another person to follow.
It's to help you better understand yourself, question yourself, correct yourself, and ultimately become capable of coaching yourself.
