How well do we know the environmental status of Europe’s seas? And can we compare it across regions?

In this episode, we look at a study by Nikolaou, Borja and Katsanevakis (2025), published in Conservation Letters. The study was developed within GES4SEAS (grant agreement No 101059877), a Horizon Europe project coordinated by AZTI that looks at how multiple human pressures combine to affect marine ecosystems.

The authors combined official assessment data from across Europe into a single, comparable picture. Their main finding is that most regions are still far from Good Environmental Status.

We talk about why, where the main monitoring and knowledge gaps are, and what this means for marine policy in Europe.

    Stay tuned, Stay current.
