Stay In Your Lane! Part 2
Speaker: Rev. Patrick Kelley
Originally Recorded: Apr 22, 2018
Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Luke 18:9-14
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
How we compare ourselves to others manifesting in pride?
I’m more dedicated.
I have more experience.
I work harder.
I’m more reliable.
I have more responsibilities.
I solve more problems than I cause.
I give more help than I receive.
I have more education.
I’m more successful.
I make more money.
I have more friends.
I have more talent.
I’m more spiritual
Romans 12:3
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
You can’t run your race and walk in pride because part of your race is to inspire those around you to run their race in Christ!
Big Idea:
Humility destroys the Spirit of Comparison manifesting in pride.
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less.”
― C.S. Lewis
Colossians 3:12
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
Psalms 25:9
He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.
Action Steps:
Where am I allowing God to change and grow me?
When was the last time someone else was right?
Compare yourself with your potential, not someone else’s performance.
Choose compliments over comparison.
Show up to serve, not be served.
