Engineers Australia comprises 9 Divisions; 8 Colleges; 28 Technical Societies and 9 national groups and represents over 100,000 members locally and overseas. Stephen graduated with an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from Monash University in 1986. In his early career, Stephen worked as a consulting engineer across Australia, Canada and Asia and in 1993, was named EA's Victorian Young Engineer of the Year. Upon completing an MBA in 1995, Stephen moved to the financial services industry where he worked for the next sixteen years for NAB in corporate strategy, change management, marketing and people leadership. Key roles included strategy partner across NAB's seven international banks; national Sales & Marketing roles as well as State Manager of the Retail Bank in NSW/ACT responsible for over 2,000 staff. Working with a diverse range of people and being exposed to a range of leadership styles has driven Stephen's career interests in cultural change, creating high performing teams and running innovative and customer-focused businesses. Since being appointed as CEO in January, 2012, Stephen Durkin has been leading a major transformation across Engineers Australia. This change program has been focused on building a more contemporary culture to support Engineers Australia in being a more member-focused organisation with a greater external orientation. This new operating model is manifesting itself in several ways, one example being a range of technology solutions such as electronic delivery of content to members and a new online Chartered program with over 6,000 engineers now registered. In addition, there has been a significant increase in EA's policy work and media presence, working towards EA being an even more visible organisation and targeting a higher profile for the engineering profession. This new focus will be showcased at EA's inaugural “Convention” to be held in Melbourne in November 2014, the largest engineering conference ever held in the southern hemisphere.
