Learning to step into a place where we can observe our thoughts and emotions rather than react from them can be a challenge but a discipline worth practicing every day.
A lot has been said about needing to be self aware. However, in general what is thought of as self awareness are our habits of mental analysis and story telling we use to define who we are and who we are based on other people and the stories we choose to believe in. Stories and storylines are how people operate before they understand that they can step back into observation and look at the entire narrative and identify the origins of the stories and why they happened in the first place.
The ego is a symptom of the habit of mental analysis. When a person discovers how to identify and detach from ego stories and look at the patterns of the ego, in observation and without attachment, they will have finally stepped into their own path of self discovery.
