Can't recommend this book,
Select a different source. Story and writing was not up to par. As a gift for a 5th grader, it needed better story telling.
One of my favorite kids books
Here is a story of courage, keeping to move forward even when people call you names, leadership, sailing, independence... one of my favorite kids books (lots of exciting naval battles). First read an old copy, from Landmark publishers (with great illustrations), but this reprint (minus the illustrations) is still great.
Exciting Biography of John Paul Jones
This is an interesting biography of John Paul Jones of American Revolution fame. It retains excitement for the young reader and provides good information on the subject. John Paul Jones was Scottish and was considered a traitor of his homeland for backing the American Revolution. In England was accused of being a pirate and not considered to be anything else. He was a great hero of the US but died in France unknown and in an unmarked grave. What happened inbetween is very interesting.
7th grade biography report
My 7th grade son recently read this for a biography report for school. He enjoyed this. He said it was entertaining and kept his interest. He would recommend it to others.
