Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.
In a our very first episode of the Stethoscopes and Soapboxes podcast, Health Policy Club President Lucie and Vice President Andrew Ritter discuss proposed changes to residency work-hour requirements published by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The two proposed revisions we discussed are a recommendation to eliminate the eight hours off between scheduled work periods and reduce the mandatory post-call break after a 24-hour shift from 14 hours to 12 hours. While the ACGME argues these changes will ease scheduling burdens without affecting patient safety or resident education, we express serious concerns that prioritizing administrative flexibility over adequate rest compromises resident health, sleep physiology, and overall safety.
