The Discover Montcalm Podcast launches a powerful new series called Veteran Spotlight, featuring the stories, experiences, and sacrifices of local veterans from Montcalm County and beyond. In this first episode, hosts Duane Weed and Kara Stevens sit down with Army veteran Steve Barnes, alongside Buck Rush from the Sheridan VFW Post 5065, for an honest conversation about military service, Desert Storm, and life after returning home.
Steve grew up in Cedar Springs, Michigan, where he enjoyed the freedom of small-town life before deciding that military service was his calling. After realizing college was not the right fit, he enlisted in the United States Army and trained in logistics and supply operations. His military journey eventually led him to Fort Stewart, Georgia, and later into active deployment during Operation Desert Storm.
During the conversation, Steve and Buck describe what it was like serving together in a National Guard maintenance company responsible for repairing and supporting military vehicles and equipment during the Gulf War. Their unit became a critical logistics hub, helping keep equipment operational for troops moving into Kuwait. The stories shared reveal not only the technical side of military operations, but also the deep friendships and teamwork that developed under pressure.
The episode also highlights the realities many veterans face after returning home. Steve speaks openly about how many service members minimize their health concerns during discharge processing because they simply want to return home to their families. Years later, that decision can make it difficult to access VA benefits and medical assistance. He encourages veterans and their families to connect with local veteran organizations and county veteran services to ensure they receive the support they deserve.
Buck and Steve both emphasize the importance of community organizations like the VFW and American Legion. These groups provide more than social gatherings — they create a support network for veterans who understand each other’s experiences and struggles.
This new Veteran Spotlight series aims to preserve local military stories while helping veterans and families learn about available resources, benefits, and support systems throughout Montcalm County.
