Coming through the youth setup at Newcastle United with loan spells at Blackpool, Bradford City & Leeds United before moving to Sunderland, Burnley, Wigan Athletic & Birmingham City. He then moved to Canada to play in the MLS with Toronto FC. He is currently Canada's assistant coach.
