Stephen Pimpare is a Senior Lecturer and nationally recognized expert in the fields of poverty, homelessness, and U.S. social policy. He has extensive experience in these areas and has made appearances on various media outlets such as NPR, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, CBC, Al Jazeera, PRI, Pacifica Radio, and Democracy Now.Before joining the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in 2015, Professor Pimpare held senior-level administrative positions in anti-hunger organizations in New York City.
He has also taught courses on American politics and public policy at the City University of New York, New York University (NYU), and Columbia University.Professor Pimpare’s second book, titled “A People’s History of Poverty in America,” received the Michael Harrington Award from the American Political Science Association. This award recognizes the book’s contribution to demonstrating how scholarship can be utilized in the pursuit of a better world.
His most recent book, published in 2017 by Oxford University Press, is titled “Ghettos, Tramps, and Welfare Queens: Down & Out on the Silver Screen.” This book explores the representation of poverty and homelessness in movies throughout history.In addition to his teaching and research endeavors, Professor Pimpare serves as the host of the Public Policy Channel on the New Books Network.
