After 7 long years with his captor, 14-year-old Steven Stayner escaped. He and another survivor, 5-year-old Timmy White showed up to the Ukiah Police Department hand-in-hand, 42 years ago this week. Steven wouldn't have escaped on his own, as he had been brainwashed to believe his captor had obtained legal custody of him. He just had to save Timmy from going through the kind of abuse he had been subjected to. Stayner was unquestionably a hero, immortalized in statue form in California, as well as in a book by Mike Echols, and a TV Miniseries in 1989. Unfortunately while Steven had escaped his captor, he couldn't shake the lasting effects of the trauma he had endured -- which caused a ripple effect throughout his family and their community.
