KARATE TO KALI STICK FIGHTING GURU John Harvey

Explore the Inspiring Martial Arts Journey of John Harvey

In our

latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with John

Harvey, a martial artist whose journey is nothing short of inspiring.

From a chance encounter with a karate academy in King's Cross, London,

to becoming a world champion in stick fighting, John's story is one of

dedication, evolution, and passion for martial arts.

In this episode, John Harvey talks to Andrew Staton at the Doncaster UK

Martial Arts Show.

John's journey began many years ago when he

stumbled upon a karate academy during a lunch hour. Intrigued, he

decided to give it a try. This decision led him to train under Major

Suzuki and meet influential figures like Bob Breen. Through rigorous

training and commitment, John quickly progressed in Wado-Ryu Karate, a

traditional and fast-paced style that laid the foundation for his

martial arts career.

The turning point in John's journey came

when he attended a seminar by Dan Inosanto, a renowned martial artist

known for his versatility and deep knowledge. The seminar introduced

John to a whole new world of martial arts, including stick fighting,

takedowns, and Jeet Kune Do (JKD). This experience was life-changing and

broadened his perspective on what martial arts could offer.

John's

passion for stick fighting grew, leading him to compete in world

championships and eventually become a world champion. His dedication

didn't stop there; he continued to teach and inspire others, helping his

students achieve their own martial arts goals. John emphasised the

importance of understanding the power of weapons like knives and sticks,

teaching young people to respect them and avoid using them

irresponsibly.

Today, John is part of the World Sport Arnis

organisation, where he continues to promote and teach martial arts. The

organisation has hosted several championships, including the upcoming

World Sport Arnis World Championships in Luton. These events not only

showcase the skills of martial artists but also promote the art to a

broader audience.

John's story is a testament to the

transformative power of martial arts. It teaches discipline, respect,

and the importance of continuous learning. Whether you're a seasoned

martial artist or someone considering taking up martial arts, John's

journey offers valuable insights and inspiration.
