On Episode 20 of Stick Talk, I am joined by good friend and fellow aviator, Dan. Dan describes how hazardous attitudes and the lack of mandatory recurrent training have lead to unacceptable fatality rates in General Aviation. It is not only enough to encourage and participate in frequent proficiency efforts, recurrent training must be MANDATORY for ALL pilots. In addition, we discuss that Safety is expensive and how money often plays a major role in the overall safety culture of an operation. 

I recently had the opportunity to receive my first type rating! Thanks to the AZBAA Type Rating Scholarship, I was able to learn how to fly a Learjet 35A. It was an incredible experience and I describe all of the things I learned and appreciated about this opportunity.

Pete S. is a recently retired American Airlines pilot with a plethora of experience and wisdom. He now teaches Aeronautical Science courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. In this episode, Pete describes his career as an airline pilot, the challenges that coronavirus brought with classroom instruction at the college level, and why he chose to pursue another career as a professor. In addition, Pete offers his two cents on the Boeing vs Airbus debate after 20 years flying Boeing aircraft and 8 years on the A321 series.

Shelby is an inspiration to all aspiring aviators. She currently serves as Cruise Captain on a Bombardier Global 5000 for Planet Nine Private Air. She received her Private Pilot License just before entering her Freshman year of college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ where she would finish the rest of her ratings and work as a CFI. She was involved in several extracurricular programs throughout her time as a student and instructor, and continues to inspire young aviators within her local 99's Chapter. 

Shelby discusses her path to becoming a pilot, her experience at ERAU both as a student and instructor, and the culture shock of flying a Global 5000 all over the globe. 

Shelby is a prime example of an individual who developed an excellent plan of action, followed the plan throughout many years of diligence and hard work, and is currently reaping the benefits of her dedication.

Sam and I met four years ago at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University when he was beginning his career as a Flight Instructor and I was a Student Pilot. Sam spent several years as a Flight Instructor and Head Coach of the Golden Eagles Flight Team before pursuing a career in Business Aviation. Sam now works as a First Officer on a Falcon 7X for Planet Nine Private Air. Sam offers excellent insight on how to take advantage of your time as a CFI to gain more intangible skills other than mere flight time. Sam describes what it is really like to be a Corporate Pilot for Planet 9 and how every single corporate pilot job is vastly different from the next. Planet 9 specializes in international Part 135 Custom VIP Charter that averages eight to ten hours of flight time per flight. This means crews spend up to 24 hours together in order to successfully complete a mission. Sam emphasizes the importance of understanding people and learning how to work with people in close proximity for extended periods of time. He shares his favorite quote from his second favorite book, The Subtle Art of Not GIving a F**k" and discusses the importance of positivity and perspective. Lastly, Sam shares a crazy story about getting quarantined in Abu Dhabi, UAE due to COVID-19 laws changing every hour. They were unable to enter the country and were forced to turn the Falcon jet into a million dollar camp site.

Tracy M. spends nearly seven days a week teaching people how to fly airplanes. You read that right--SEVEN. Whether he is practicing maneuvers in the air, teaching in a classroom, or just helping colleagues increase their knowledge, he is one of the most dedicated aviators around. He joins me on Episode 15 of Stick Talk to talk about his time in the Navy, post-service life, and journey to becoming a Flight Instructor. Tracy served as a Flight Engineer assisting in essential crew duties and system monitoring in a Lockheed P3 Orion (NOAA uses this plane to fly into the middle of hurricanes). His experience as a naval aviator made his decision to pursue his civilian flight ratings an easy one. It is a prime example of how the GI Bill can be a truly incredible reward for service in the armed forces. Originally, Tracy did not see himself becoming a flight instructor after finishing initial flight training. He talks about how the decision to pursue flight instructing influenced his progress and development as a pilot more-so than if he were to do a different time-building opportunity. Tracy gives some great tips and tricks on various aspects of aviation and discusses the importance of CRM in the cockpit.

In Episode 14 of Stick Talk, I interview my very good friend, Dylan Horn. Dylan and I met our freshman year of college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as he was beginning his helicopter training with Universal Helicopter Institute. Dylan and I bonded over our mutual passion for things without wings and I have learned so much about the differences between rotary and fixed wing flight from him.   Dylan and I discuss his journey through initial flight training, his time as a CFI/CFII, and his decision to become a tour pilot after the demise of UHI. If you haven't heard of UHI, they are a classic case of how mismanagement, greed, and poor company culture can make unlimited profit go 100-0 real quick.   A tragic incident occurred on Sunday January 26th as a Sikorsky S-76B model helicopter crashed near Calabasas, CA killing all occupants. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, and fans of the deceased; Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Christina Mauser, Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Gianna Bryant, Kobe Bryant, and Ara Zobayan.
