Marley Munroe is almost a chameleon, appearing as a dystopian re incarnation of "Auntie" from Thunderdome, singing the national anthem at a Lakers game, or scaring the hell out of you while singing on stage with her hair doing whatever it wants. She has just released an album called "Black Acid Soul" that began as a small project that created this current larger than life persona "Lady Blackbird".
If you can imagine a blackbird being like Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" singing the social commentary from the point of view of a queer woman of color, with an army of demons and beauty to unleash with her voice, you might almost get what I am talking about.
She was described as Grace Jones meets Nina Simone, I put her music to the test, and she is all that and more. Her work should be part of your shuffle, just hold on to your head, and try to keep it screwed on. Listening to her, I coined the term "Gothic Jazz", cause that is exactly what she sounds like.
