This episode turns the lens on ourselves: because while the mental health system needs to be fixed, we have to look at our role in that as a society. 


We need to ask ourselves: do we have an epidemic of mental health problems in Ireland? How do we contribute to poor mental health through stigma, and through creating policies and planning for a society that doesn’t put people at the centre? And we need to ask, how do we collectively build communities and systems that catch people when they fall?

Every system is built on an invisible foundation, supported by invisible scaffolding, which is our cultural understanding of mental health. If our system isn’t fit for purpose, what culture, what beliefs are shoring up this system?


In this final episode in the six-part series of Where There’s a Will, we will try and shine a light on some of the philosophical underpinnings of our system as it stands. Because there’s a battleground – and some very different worldviews – clamouring to shape what our mental health systems globally will look like in the future.


In this episode, we speak to Professor Peter Kinderman, of the University of Liverpool; Dr Pat Bracken, psychiatrist; and Dr Terry Lynch, GP and psychotherapist; about their vision for the future of our mental health models. Children are the most precious and vulnerable members of our society. They are a blank slate – they come into the world with no hang ups, preconceptions, fears or worries. We teach them all that.


But more and more, our children are finding it hard to cope. Childhood, this precious, carefree time is becoming a tougher ground to navigate. For some it is time full of worries, stresses and fear.


In this episode, we speak to Niall Muldoon, the Ombudsman for Children, Paul Gilligan, CEO of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, and Dominic Laydon, CEO of Aware.
