Scripture:
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?” — Matthew 5:13
What does it mean to truly make a difference?
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we reflect on Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:13 and His description of believers as the salt of the earth.
Salt is not flashy.
It is not loud.
It is not meant to draw attention to itself.
But its influence is undeniable.
It preserves what would decay.
It brings out what would otherwise go unnoticed.
It changes everything it touches simply by being what it was created to be.
And yet Jesus gives a sobering warning: salt can lose its savour. It can become ineffective.
It is possible to carry the name of Christ…
To show up in the right places…
To say the right things…
And still no longer have any real influence.
When our lives blend in completely with the culture…
When our presence changes nothing…
When our absence would go unnoticed…
Something has been lost.
This devotional is a call to examine not just whether we once made a difference — but whether we still are.
The influence of a life rooted in Christ does not fade with time. But it does require intentionality. It requires staying close to God and being willing to live differently in a world that encourages us to blend in.
You were placed where you are for a reason.
The question is not whether you can make a difference…
It is whether you are.
