Publisher's Summary:
Stoicism is one philosophy that is not just theoretical in nature. It is something that you learn to adopt into your everyday life; its ancient wisdom is more relevant than ever today.
Dating back to around 300 BC in Athens, Stoicism was initially developed by Zeno of Citium. The essence of the philosophy is one of using grit and self-control as ways of overcoming destructive emotions. Despite the modern perception of the word Stoic, this does not mean to eliminate all kinds of feelings from your life. The goal, rather, is to transform your emotions. Stretching from the Hellenistic period to the 21st century, Stoicism has not lost its practicality in dealing with the problems of life, incorporating logic, self-dialogue, and meditation designed to keep your attention fixed on the present moment. It ensures a firm and consistent way of life that focuses on the choices you make so that failure ultimately leads to more success.
For anyone new to the Stoic philosophy, let this book guide you through everything you need to know in one easily accessible yet comprehensive introduction, from its origin and history to the core beliefs and principles. Most importantly, Stoicism: A Beginner's Guide to the Ancient Art, History, and Wisdom of the Stoic Philosophy focuses on why Stoicism is relevant to your life today.

Short, sweet, to the point.
Short, sweet, to the point.
But overall, it is simply ok. This is a super light review of what Stoicism is, to the extent that saying that Sesame Street is a 'kids show with puppets'. I appreciate the fact that the book exists, because I bought it and then bought a few follow-on books because of this book, but I can't say that this book had any 'new' information. Two pros: The price is extremely 'on point' for the book, and you can read it in about 30minutes. Realities: Don't expect any detail in this book to answer all your questions, rather, it'll let you know if you want to buy the Seneca/Mediations books which are $20/pop. So in that regards, this book serves a pretty good purpose.
Excellent!
Stoicism swims against the tidal wave of words and emotion based thinking currently pervasive in society. Stoicism is character and action based. It focuses on Virtue and Wisdom and Reason things nearly lost in todayâs hyperbolic vitriol filled media saturated environment that above all worships feelings whether reality based or not.
I recommend as an excellent stroll through a different world view.
Nice Primer
Nice intro to the philosophy. Very similar to other texts I've read on mindfulness and existentialism, or longer treatises like "Man's Search for Meaning".
