EXCELLENT!
I chanced upon this title while browsing through Amazon.com. The premise sounded interesting, so I thought I'd take a chance. This book is marvelous! The author takes you through all sorts of nooks and crannies until you are shocked at the end by the actual stonekiller. The setting (Vichy France during WWII) and the interplay between the two detectives (one French, one German) adds spice to a fine storyline. I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained about too many merde's and Gott in Himmel's. They do not get in the way of the story at all. The author realistically portrays Vichy France and the interplay between the French police and the Gestapo and SS. You are quickly drawn in and you will breathlessly follow St. Cyr and Kohler all the way through to the exciting climax. If you are looking for something a bit off beat, but yet thrilling and exciting, pick this one up.
Ach, Gott in Himmel, a cavalcade of cliches
Before WW1 a married archeology student and his lover, find a cave system that is full of Neaderthal and Cro-Magnan hand tools. This find will make him famous. Every thing he found is packed up in a trunk and sent to his parents in Paris. He goes off to war leaving his pregnant lover and his wife and young daughter. He never comes back.
Every year the lover visits the cave and celebrates her lover with a picnic. In 1942 she is found murdered in the little valley. She had been mutilated with a stone axe and flint knives. St.Cyr and Koehler are returning from a mission in the âzone libreâ and are pulled off of a north-bound train to help find the killer.
The daughter of the murdered woman lives in a small village in the vicinity of the cave. She and her husband are schoolteachers with two young children. Her husband is an abusive man who recently came back from volunteering to fight for the Germans in Russia. His right hand and leg well damaged in an attack and he has come home disabled and angry.
Before coming to celebrate this last time the murdered woman had been receiving postcards from someone who signed them with her dead(?) husbandâs name. Needing money her in-laws had sold the trunk and it was bought by an enemy of her dead husband. The archeologist finds the cave and in a second chamber he finds cave paintings and an amulet. The amulet appears to have a swatstika carved on it.
Himmler finds out about the amulet and with the help of Goebbels and Hitler is going to make a movie proving that âAryansâ lived in this valley 100,000 years ago. Is the man who went off to war now seeking revenge on those who stole his findings(?) It all very complicated.
The film crew is right out of central castingâthe overbearing director, his slutty star actress wife, her lover, the ingénue (who has a cocaine problem) and is the dead man in the crew? Way too many clichés.

Too much "merde" and "Gott in Himmell"
The premise of this book sounded so wonderful that I immediately snapped it up. However, Janes's writing talents--in plot, character, dialogue and sheer command of language--are sadly lacking.
