Joshua is instructed by the Lord to take 12 stones out of the Jordan River over to the promised land that the Lord had brought them. What was the purpose? The stones were for a memorial, to remember the great miracle that the Lord had done for them. The Lord has likewise given us a memorial of living stones to attest to the glory of the Lord in bringing us through to the promises He has for us.
