Stonewalling: Emotional Abuse in Relationships That Is Rarely Realized

Listen Later

Not all couples are able to communicate in an appropriate and healthy way, which often leads to misunderstandings and inevitable arguments. However, arguing can be a healthy part of a relationship if both parties know how to communicate effectively and resolve misunderstandings. If one partner avoids addressing the issues, it can lead to indirect emotional abuse, such as stonewalling.Stonewalling is when someone refuses to engage in a difficult conversation, dispute, or respond to someone expressing pain or need. A stonewaller typically responds with a blank, calm demeanor to someone's emotional expression. For instance, if you try to express your needs to your partner, but they consistently avoid serious conversations and divert the topic, or if they leave during an argument and refuse to discuss it when they return, it may be a sign of stonewalling.
