Stop Asking God to Calm the Storm — He’s Trying to Teach You to Command It (The Other 16, Part 6)

Listen Later

Most believers pray, “Lord, calm the storm.” But what if the storm wasn’t sent to destroy you — it was sent to develop you?

The Other 16 Part 6

Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:]

Philippians 2:5 AMPC

*- What attitude, purpose, and humble mind did Jesus have?

3 Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].

*- Demons often use people to stir up storms in our lives—and sometimes the one they use is us.

*- Be careful to let only the Holy Spirit guide your reactions and responses, because He alone produces love and peace.

4 Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.

5 Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:]

Philippians 2:3-5 AMPC

36 And leaving the throng, they took Him with them, [just] as He was, in the boat [in which He was sitting]. And other boats were with Him.

37 And a furious storm of wind [of hurricane proportions] arose, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that it was already becoming filled.

38 But He [Himself] was in the stern [of the boat], asleep on the [leather] cushion; and they awoke Him and said to Him, Master, do You not care that we are perishing?

39 And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now! Be still (muzzled)! And the wind ceased (sank to rest as if exhausted by its beating) and there was [immediately] a great calm (a perfect peacefulness).

40 He said to them, Why are you so timid and fearful? How is it that you have no faith (no firmly relying trust)?

41 And they were filled with great awe and feared exceedingly and said one to another, Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey Him?”

Mark 4:36-41 AMPC

*- We often want Jesus to calm the storm, but remember…

*- Jesus was displeased that they wanted Him to calm the storm.

*- Jesus would rather we wait for His decision about what to do with the storm since He’s in it with us.

*- Don’t cheapen His presence within you by fearing how the storm can harm you, instead of knowing that in the storm, Jesus will help you, and He often helps without giving us prior notice.

*- Reacting with unrighteous anger in the midst of our storms reveals a lack of faith in Jesus. But faith doesn’t silence emotion—it destroys the fleshly influence of our emotions to be selfish. Righteous faith feels the effects of the storm, yet remains dependent on Jesus, allowing the Holy Spirit to govern every response under Christ’s Lordship.

*- Salvation is here. Receive Jesus now.

Lifework Assignment:

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

1 John 1:9 AMPC

*- Thank You, Father, that when we confess our sins, You’re faithful to forgive and cleanse us from everything that keeps us from conforming to Your will. Thank You for not only forgiving our sinful actions, but also cleansing our hearts, minds, souls, and spirits from whatever influenced us to betray or disobey You—so that we’ll never again depend on that false source to lead us astray.

Expected Behavior:

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.

Romans 12:16 AMPC

*- Most people who are strongly opinionated don’t believe they’re wrong—and often refuse to humble themselves, assuming they’ll have time to make things right later.

*- But what they fail to understand is that God is saying, “The time you consider to be yours is really Mine, and I am a revengeful God.

*- Don’t be among those the Bible warns about—who cling to their opinions and risk eternity in the lake of fire—just to prove their selfish points now, instead of submitting to what God has already said.

And if anyone’s [name] was not found recorded in the Book of Life, he was hurled into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:15 AMPC

*- Let it all go—your sneaky, sinful, selfish, and opinionated ways, once and for all. Don’t risk being thrown into the lake of fire forever and ever.

There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but at the end of it is the way of death.

Proverbs 14:12 AMPC

*- Which way are you going?

*- The altar is now open for those who are truly sorry, repentant, and serious about only going and believing in God’s way for the rest of their lives, instead of going and believing in their own ways.
