What Is Life, Dude?

Stop Doing What You Hate So You Can Be Happy “One Day”

Listen Later

This week’s episode is all about the “doing to get” paradigm: the all-too-common belief that we must forgo our happiness & wellbeing in the present in order to experience happiness at a later point in time (which is never guaranteed).

The classic example is someone who works the job they hate for most of their life, with the (illusory) promise of security and freedom after retirement.

How can we start to shift out of this pattern and build a life that feels good in the now?

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What is the “doing to get” paradigm?
  • Practical examples in our lives involving exercise and diet.
  • A process to shift out of this old way of thinking and into prioritizing our wellbeing and enjoyment in the now.
  • The importance of envisioning your ideal *state of being* over an ideal physical/material outcome.
  • How to examine and question the beliefs that are holding you back from pursuing this.
  • Taking inventory of where in your life you’re already experiencing your ideal state of being, however small or big those instances may be.
  • Giving yourself radical permission to pour more energy into activities, people, places that pull you into that aligned state of being.
  • An application of this process to Eric’s relationship with music.
