In this short episode I tell the story of my recent trip to Puerto Rico.
In short, I was cut off from my normal buffering activities. At first, I was totally annoyed because I didn't know how to, "relax" without something to take me out of my own thoughts.
Then I discovered that in order to really calm my nervous system, and turn down the volume on my racing thoughts...I had to cut myself off. And I did. And it was magical.
This episode is the result of a conversation that we had in the ADHD Enclave about the distinction between numbing out and relaxing.
Numbing out = intentionally avoiding FEELING things, or thinking about things, or taking some action. Numbing out almost always involves some temporary pleasurable activity like social media, or bingeing on Netflix.
Relaxing = intentionally engaging with your own thoughts. Allowing yourself to breathe, think, and even feel your emotions.
This episode is not prescriptive, I really just want people to think.
