So there he was, in the Plaza, minding his own business, when she called him into her life, even if she didn't seem to quite realise what she'd done. She could be so annoying like that, but the law was the law and when the call came, you went. Now the question was, what to do next?

This is a story about second chances, working in a library, love, betrayal, damnation and  how not to deal with bureaucracy.

All his life he's been living in the shadow of this call; the one that will pull him out of his comfortable life and now it's come. An old love is on the other end of the line, telling him the family legacy can't wait anymore. He's going to have to come deal with it. Refusal isn't an option.

Set in the shadow of the Balkan Wars, a guide, charged with leading a group of refugees to  safety, will need to overcome the impossible to do so. This is a story about love, loss, anger and fear, lots of fear. It involves hillwalking and magic.
