Storms Will Come *Rerecorded

Listen Later

These are bigger than currents and small obstacles and often they sneak up on you. Storms can make tiny things very difficult and you can't prepare enough for them on your own.  They will come ready or not.  Have you ever been on the water in a boat and had one of those popup storms?  No warning and the water and sky turn dark. Then, you are in trouble. These will be some of your most life-changing moments.  This is the moment that will determine what is beneath the rough surface when all of that is ground away. Sometimes you feel like they steer you way off course but often they put you right where you were meant to be.

This episode almost didn't happen because the recording was lost and it had to be redone but this may be the most significant story I can share with you. This is the story of our road through Katrina and our renewal that strengthened my faith like nothing else.

Isaiah 49:19-20

Isaiah 54:2-3

Lessons-

  • God can restore better than we can imagine
  • No matter how bad it seems someone’s is always worse but we aren’t to dwell on that, we are to love and endure it together.
  • Our perspective has everything to do with our reaction.
  • When we look to God and the bible for answers, we can find better wisdom than anywhere.
  • If we focus on the bad, all we will see is the bad, but if we focus on his desire for goodness for us, we will find that goodness.
  • We grow most when we start Changing thoughts from Why me to What is God trying to teach me or someone else?

  • John 6:16-21

    Deuteronomy 31:5-6, 20-21

I was reminded that the sad and difficult truth is often, when things are good, that's when we are easily distracted, less reliant on him, and tend to drift away more than ever.  While we want the good times to keep coming, this is so often the time we spend less time praying, less time in the word, and less time communing with God.  It was when they ate their fill and were thriving, they turned straight to other gods. For us maybe other priorities, other people, or material things.  Then, when they strayed from the one true God, trouble came, as it often does. It is usually a result of our own choices and decisions but we turn to God and want help.  The good is that we turn to God but the bad is that we had to turn at all.  This isn't to guilt you or to bribe you to stay focused on God just to keep bad things from happening.  It is just to serve as a reminder that it happens often and rather than asking "Why is this happening to me", asking "What can I learn from this?" or "How can I grow in this?"  What happened has already happened and you don't have to go back upstream and start over, just look to God, especially in the storm, and let him redirect you.  Then, the biggest key here is to TRUST that He has plans for your future that will be better than your plans.
