Stove began as a side project of Ovlov front man Steve Hartlett. Hartlett used the moniker to release songs that didn't quite fit with his other projects, allowing him to experiment with new sounds and songwriting styles. Over time Stove became Hartlett's focal point and a full band was recruited to perform his noisy, kinetic jams.
