  • Walking With a Purpose: Why Metal Detecting Is More Than Finding Stuff

In this episode of Straight From The Coil, David sits down with Sam, The Medical Detectorist, to talk about his journey into metal detecting, the lessons he has learned along the way, and why the hobby has become about much more than simply finding coins and jewelry.

Sam shares how he got started with the Nokta Legend, why learning one detector over time made such a difference, and what eventually led him to move to the Minelab Manticore. The conversation also covers beach hunting, field and woods detecting, seeded hunts, traveling with a metal detector, and some of Sam’s favorite finds — including an 1877 Carson City Seated Liberty quarter, gold and platinum rings, and a New Jersey copper.

But the conversation goes deeper than equipment and finds.

Sam describes metal detecting as “walking with a purpose” — a hobby that combines exercise, patience, perseverance, mental stimulation, history, research, and the opportunity to simply get away from everything else for a few hours.

They also talk about dealing with detecting slumps, changing locations to keep the hobby fresh, why beginners shouldn’t expect every hunt to produce an amazing find, and why enjoying the experience is ultimately what keeps people in the hobby.

If you’re new to metal detecting or have been swinging a detector for years, this conversation is a reminder that sometimes the best part of the hobby isn’t what comes out of the ground.

  • Why We Keep Metal Detecting — A Conversation With Frank Zottola

What keeps someone coming back to metal detecting year after year?

In this episode of Straight From The Coil, David sits down with Frank Zottola for a relaxed conversation about Frank’s journey into metal detecting, the experiences and finds he’s had along the way, and what keeps the hobby worth getting out there for.

They talk about more than detectors and targets. It’s about the stories, the people, the memories, and the simple anticipation of never knowing what the next signal might reveal.

Whether you’re brand new to metal detecting or you’ve been swinging a detector for years, Frank’s perspective is a reminder that some of the best parts of this hobby go far beyond what comes out of the ground.

  • How Long Does It Take to Get Good at Metal Detecting?

You’re a metal detectorist the minute you turn the machine on — but how long does it take before you actually start feeling confident?

In this episode of Straight From The Coil, David talks about the different stages most beginners go through, from digging everything and second-guessing every signal to recognizing patterns, recovering targets faster, and understanding what the detector is really telling you.

There’s no magic number of hours, and getting better doesn’t mean you stop digging trash. Progress comes from experience, consistency, site selection, and learning from every target you recover.

A better way to measure your progress is simple:

Do you understand more today than you did when you started?

  • Stop Chasing Perfect Settings — Learn Your Detector First

There’s no shortage of videos promising the “best” or “perfect” metal detector settings — but for a beginner, constantly tuning and changing your machine can actually make learning harder.

In this episode of Straight From The Coil, David talks about why consistency matters, why tuning during a hunt is often an advanced skill, and why beginners should learn a simple baseline setup before chasing small performance gains.

We’ll cover sensitivity, recovery speed, discrimination, ground balance, noise cancel, factory programs, and the most important question to ask before changing any setting:

What problem am I actually trying to solve?

Learn the baseline first. Optimize later.

  • You Don’t Need a Better Detector — You Need More Time With the One You’ve Got

In this episode of Straight From The Coil, David talks about one of the easiest traps for newer metal detectorists to fall into: believing better finds are hiding behind a better detector.

We’ll talk about why time with your machine matters, why tones and target behavior are more important than simply watching VDI numbers, how constantly changing detectors can slow your progress, and when an upgrade actually makes sense.

Before you decide your detector is holding you back, ask yourself one question: Have I really learned the one I already have?
