The truth for the woman on this day was that to be set free from sin, she must surrender to Christ every other controlling relationship. The issue of religious liberty hinges on the same choice today. Will the church fully accept Christ as its master, or will it remain submitted to the world and its policies, philosophies, customs, and expectations? The truth can set us free, but we must be willing to surrender everything that separates us from the Freedom-Giver

Religious liberty originates in the heavenly sanctuary. It is here that Christ serves as High Priest and gives people victory over sin. It is here that God's servants find an anchor for their faith and assurance that their prayers will be heard and answered. It is here that the principles of God's law of freedom are written on the mind and the heart. And it is here, in the heavenly sanctuary, that religious liberty is born, matures, and gains the victory.

Without a Biblical understanding of the sanctuary, religious liberty cannot be properly understood. Deny the existence of a heavenly sanctuary, and the only reality that remains is slavery to sin. The warning applies to individuals and to churches. Any church that ignores or forgets the sanctuary will eventually lose the entire gospel and devolve into spiritual tyranny. God's way is in the sanctuary, and His promise of religious liberty is found in the place where He dwells.

Jesus said of John the Baptist, "There is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist" (Luke 7:28). What made this man the greatest prophet? John's ministry focused on the spoken word. His message revived the prophetic voice, for centuries silent among God's people. His mission was to speak the truth. His message attacked sin itself--that most dangerous enemy of true religious liberty. The true prophetic voice has always done the same.

The promise of overcoming would not be given if it were impossible. God's Word contains the same power today that it did at creation. It still calls forth light out of darkness. It still controls the elements and subdues the turbulent waves. It still creates new life where there was none. The Word of God can still become flesh and make even Laodiceans partakers of the divine nature.
