In Stranger Things season 2, Will Byers is haunted by visions of a massive shadow creature from the Upside Down, which he dubs the "Mind Flayer". The monster begins to spread a network of tunnels under Hawkins, possessing Will as its spy. To fight back, Joyce, Hopper, Nancy, and Jonathan team up with the new girl, Max, and Will's friends, eventually reuniting with Eleven after she finds her origins through Dr. Owens's research. The season culminates in a battle to close the gate to the Upside Down, which Eleven successfully does, saving Will and the town for the moment.
