Old Man Jack exhaled, a flare of nostril-sound to both punctuate thoughts unspoken and deride those that had been, “Posting?” said Old Man Jack, “thought all that died out years ago...”
“N-no sir.” replied the Youth, “The old ways are still used by many. We prefer them actually, they feel more—”
“Real?” Interrupted Old Man Jack, who wheezed as he laughed, “Let me tell yah’ a little somethin’ ‘bout posting... nothin’ real about it, none of it. Go spend time with your friends, love somebody; find meanin’ in somethin’ beautiful..Just get outta here.” And with the help of his cane, Old Man Jack creaked out of his porch chair and turned from the sitting Youth to amble back inside the house.
“I’m a poster Mr. Allison…” Said the Youth almost too low to hear, and Old Man Jack paused mid-shuffle with his back turned, “My mother, father, my uncle...It’s in my blood.”
“Yeah and where are they now?” Old Man Jack replied, his voice dry and unreliable, “Why are you here on the front porch of some old coot with fairy tales in your eyes? Go home young one...forget I ever existed.”
“When I was a little girl..” The Youth replied getting to her feet, “before I could even read, my dad would put me on his lap and we’d use the Wayback Machine to pull up your old tweets, ‘My god…’ He would say with tears in his eyes, ‘My god, but the man can post.’ You’ve asked me why I’ve come Mr. Allison..I’ve come because you were one of the best posters who ever lived, and I want you to teach me.” Old Man Jack’s grip on his cane turned his knuckles white, and his entire arm trembled —his face too, physical reactions to the metaphysical storm inside his mind, a cyclonic rift of memories and feelings: triumphs, despairs and everything in-between, a life lived by another man long since gone from this world. A long moment passed between the two in silence.
“I don't do that anymore...” Old Man Jack said, and without so much as a backward glance, hobbled inside and shut the door.
