Gray Matter Chronicles

Stress and Auditory Processing

Listen Later

Research from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev reveals that chronic stress significantly alters auditory processing in mice. Specifically, stress increases the activity of SST inhibitory brain cells, leading to a decreased response to quieter sounds while maintaining sensitivity to louder ones. This suggests that stress impacts not only emotional responses but also the perception of neutral sensory information. The study, published in PLOS Biology, utilized longitudinal measurements of cortical activity and behavioral observations to demonstrate a gradual impairment of auditory processing and perception over time. These findings have implications for understanding stress-related sensory disorders.
