How Stress Wrecks Your Gut (and 3 Simple Ways to Break the Cycle)

Family and Lifestyle Medicine doctor Adrian explains the biological link between stress and IBS-like gut symptoms, describing how sustained cortisol and adrenaline can reduce protective gut bacteria, weaken the gut lining, increase leakiness, and amplify pain sensitivity through the vagus nerve. He outlines how stress activates mast cells in the intestines to release histamine and inflammatory compounds, creating a self-reinforcing brain–gut loop that can persist even after the stressor ends. He notes that bacterial imbalance and inflammation may take weeks to develop and rarely resolves on its own, recommending a chat with a doctor if symptoms persist. He shares three strategies to help interrupt the cycle: eating small daily amounts of fermented foods (supported by a 2021 Cell study), doing paced breathing with a longer exhale (5 seconds in, 7 seconds out) three to five times before meals, and regular post-meal movement plus vagal-toning practices like humming, singing, or gargling.
