Strings in Action: The Power of Music

Listen Later

“Music is a universal language; it brings people together.” Ella Fitzgerald may have said this many years ago, but we only have to look at JIS Strings in Action (SiA), its talented members, and their many endeavors to find that her words ring truer than ever. Join our hosts, Middle School Vocal Music Teacher Morgan Banino and PIE Digital Literacy Coach Mindy Slaughter, as they take a closer look at a beloved service club that has flourished into a full-fledged foundation working to change the lives of underprivileged children through music. Joining them are the passion and drive behind Strings in Action: JIS Strings Teacher Simo Gonzalo and JIS Grade 11 student Alex, one of the original members of the club and now SiA President. Find out what inspired Simo to establish SiA at JIS in 2015 and how, in only a few short years, the club grew from having just three student members to leading orchestras, employing two local music teachers, and working with schools and organizations across Jakarta.
