consider how it may be trying to protect you from something (e.g. failure, loss of love/acceptance) by being so harsh

Thank your inner critic for its efforts and tell it that it is no longer needed.

Respond to the harsh comments with compassion, like you would with a friend who is being hard on her/himself.
