Walking With the Saints

Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

Listen Later

Friends of Jesus

Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were siblings from the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem. They are known for their close friendship with Jesus, who frequently visited their home. Their story is one of deep faith, hospitality, and love, exemplifying the virtues of Christian family life and discipleship.

Saint Martha: The Model of Service

Martha is perhaps best known for her role as a hostess. In the Gospel of Luke, Martha welcomes Jesus into her home and is busy with the tasks of serving. When she complains that her sister Mary is not helping, Jesus gently reminds her that Mary has chosen "the better part" by listening to His teaching. Despite this, Martha's active service and hospitality are highly valued and honored in Christian tradition.

In another significant encounter in the Gospel of John, Martha demonstrates her strong faith when her brother Lazarus dies. She goes to meet Jesus and expresses her belief in Him, saying, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world." Her faith is rewarded when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.

Saint Mary: The Contemplative Heart

Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, is known for her contemplative spirit. She is often depicted sitting at Jesus' feet, listening intently to His words. This act of devotion and attentiveness represents the importance of prioritizing spiritual nourishment and the contemplative life.

Mary also plays a significant role in the anointing of Jesus. In the Gospel of John, she anoints Jesus' feet with costly perfume and wipes them with her hair, an act of profound love and devotion. Jesus defends her actions, recognizing her insight into His impending death and burial.

Saint Lazarus: Witness to the Resurrection

Lazarus is best known for his miraculous resurrection from the dead, as recounted in the Gospel of John. When Lazarus falls ill, his sisters send word to Jesus, hoping for His intervention. Jesus delays His visit, and Lazarus dies. Upon His arrival, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, demonstrating His power over life and death and foreshadowing His own resurrection. This miracle strengthens the faith of many and solidifies Lazarus's role as a powerful witness to Jesus' divinity.

Feast Day and Legacy

The feast day of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus is celebrated on July 29th. They are honored together as a family who exemplified love, faith, and hospitality. Their home in Bethany was a place where Jesus found friendship, rest, and devotion, offering a model for Christian families and communities.

May the example of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus inspire us to cultivate a balance of service and contemplation in our lives, to welcome Christ into our homes and hearts, and to live as witnesses to His love and power.
