The Police Minister says New Zealanders will die from the drug fentanyl that's at the centre of a drug overdose crisis in the US.
Stuart Nash has come back from a work trip to Mexico to learn about the fentanyl and other opioid drugs.
Fentanyl is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in the US every year.
Overdoses have risen 500 per cent in the last three years.
Nash told Mike Hosking it's a real risk if it gets into the country more easily.
"How we handle the first three months when it appears in this country. It is cheap, it is nasty, it's highly addictive, it's synthetic, and it will kill people. We've got to make sure that we're ready."
