Talia Smith recently won a Student Academy Award for her short film Umama, which she made as her thesis film at New York University. Talia explains what Umama is about - its context and background, telling South African stories, and the considerations that go into committing a story inspired by real life events to film. She also tells us all about her experience with the Academy and being a medalist in the 2020 Student Academy Awards.
