The self proclaimed, “poor farm boy” Rich Grogan found at an early age that he was different than the other kids around him. He realized that he was the one who was different. Rich navigated through being different and feeling that he needed to prove himself to the world. He says that bullying is a behavior. It is not the person. If a behavior is ignored, it will be repeated. Bullying takes many forms such as isolation, shaming others, verbal, and physical forms as well. Rich shares that hurt people hurt others and lash out so people can feel the same type of pain.

Michelle MacLellan is a special education teacher who has been in the field for over 17 years. Michelle is a mom of two: a neurotypical 11 year old daughter and a neurodiverse 7 year old son. It was her role of mom that initially led her down the executive functioning path searching for strategies to use at home. Author Dawn Barclay speaks to you about how to make traveling and going on vacation fun when you are a parent of a child with an invisible disability. Several suggestions that she provides are prepare your child for the upcoming vacation by reading books or watching videos of the future trip, bring a go-to-bag with items such as snacks, headphones, and glasses if there will be bright lights etc. Add any items that your child might want or need during the trip, have a sleepover at someone’s house to prepare them for not sleeping in their own bed, and call ahead to the restaurant and order your child’s meal so there is no wait time or meltdowns because of hunger. Adva is a self-proclaimed IEP kid. “Having an IEP doesn’t mean students will struggle their whole life,“ said Adva. Even with this positive attitude as an adult, she struggled all throughout school and felt as though she was not understood by her teachers. In the mist of getting her two bachelor degrees and soon after to earn her Master’s Degree, she found and read one of her IEP’s from high school. Adva talks to you about the areas of her learning that once troubled her but now excels in and those areas that she still is mindful of.

This is a heartfelt story that reminds us that what we write about our students and the importance of connecting with our students who struggle learning makes a difference in their childhood and beyond.

When students have positive experiences, the outcomes can be many. Such outcomes can be the development of positive self–concepts and an increase of confidence in one’s own abilities. However, when children have repeated negative experiences they can contribute to their inability to be resilient and decrease their confidence in their own skills and abilities. When we explicitly teach students toward their executive functioning skills, they are able to generalize information and strategies learned in their related service sessions such as speech, occupational therapy, counseling etc. as well as in the classroom. When each professional works toward reinforcing the skills learned in each academic setting the needs of the whole child are being met. Proactively build resiliency to avoid mental health concerns such as feeling anxious due to the evidence of repeated failure. The way in which we teach children can support different outcomes.
