Three percent of children younger than 18 are blind or visually impaired (CDC) and according to the NCBI approximately 500,000 children become blind annually. The CEO of Helen Keller National Center and Helen Keller Services for the Blind educates us on the importance of accessibility for this diverse population of individuals. Integrating the hearing and deaf worlds can be supported through school- aged students choosing ASL (American Sign Language) as their second language to study, employees considering a deaf and/or blind applicant as an employee, supporting the roles of job coaches within the workplace and approaching assessability proactively. Sue Ruzenski is the CEO of Helen Keller Services, an organization that helps improve the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision, or combined hearing and vision loss. Sue has had a 40-year tenure at Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths and Adults and worked with employees across the organization to implement innovative services to meet the identified priorities of the community. She is an Oscar-nominated producer and the 2021 recipient of the LIBN Diversity Award.
Sue has recently been featured on Respect Ability, The New Yorker, Newsday and Fox 5 New York.
