Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 20th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Jeremiah 38:4-6,8-10

  • Jeremiah is cast into a cistern at the threat of his enemies.
  • Ebed-melech, a court official, pleads for his release and releases him from the cistern.
  • Psalm – 40:2-4,18

    • “Lord, come to my aid!”
    • Afflicted and poor, the Lord draws us out from the pit of destruction.
    • 2nd Reading – Hebrews 12:1-4

      • Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we persevere in running the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
      • We continue in our struggle against sin as we recall how Christ endured the Cross.
      • Gospel – Luke 12:49-52

        • The Lord comes to set a fire blazing upon the earth that will cause division, even among families.
        • Mass Readings – 20th Sunday of the Year (#120)
