Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 12:1-11

  • During a time of great unrest James is killed and Peter is taken to prison.
  • The night before his trial, and angel comes to Peter and frees him.
  • Psalm – 34:2-9

    • “The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him.”
    • We praise God who delivers us in our need.
    • 2nd Reading – 2nd Timothy 4:6-8,17-18

      • Paul writes how he has finished the race and kept the faith.
      • He speaks about how God gave him strength and has rescued him from every evil threat.
      • Gospel – Matthew 16:13-19

        • Peter answers the Lord’s question, and Jesus gives him a new name that reveals he is the rock upon which Christ will build his church.
        • This church will have the power to bind and loose, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
        • Mass Readings – Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul (#591)
